Elon Musk has filed an injunction to prevent artificial intelligence (AI) firm OpenAI from turning into a profitable corporation. He filed this application in the US Northern District of California District Court last Friday evening.
As reported by TechCrunch, the petition accuses Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, OpenAI board members and shareholder Microsoft. The complaint says they “violated the terms of Musk's charitable contributions” and are acting anti-competitively when OpenAI seeks to transform itself into a for-profit company.
OpenAI's transformation from a nonprofit to a for-profit giant was riddled with anti-competitive practices, according to court documents. This is a clear violation of Mask's philanthropic initiative and the individuals involved are doing this for their own gain or self-interest.
Elon Musk was an early investor and board member of OpenAI. However, he severed his relationship with the company in 2018. He later alleged that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman had breached their contract. The agreement was to keep OpenAI as a non-profit organization and to deploy open source AI technology in human service.
Musk filed a lawsuit last year for breach of contract. But later withdrew that case and filed a 'stronger' case based on the same allegations.
Elon Musk has asked the court to grant an injunction to protect what remains of OpenAI's benevolent character, freeing it from self-serving behavior.
Musk's injunction petition accuses OpenAI of conduct well suited to halting the company's transition from a nonprofit to a for-profit corporation. Allegations include OpenAI striking a deal with investors not to fund competitors like Musk's XAI, OpenAI and Microsoft creating 'special arrangements' that help them together dominate the market for generative AI products. Also, Sam Altman has made some deals with OpenAI, where he has his own financial gain. These deals are with companies like Stripe, Rain AI, Helion Energy and Reddit.
In this regard, a spokesperson of OpenAI said that this is the fourth time that Elon Musk has made such a complaint. The previous ones have raised the same baseless allegations.
