Sam Marino, the lowest-ranked team in FIFA, has made history in the Nations League. Despite falling behind, they beat Liechtenstein 3-1 and progressed to the third tier of the league. It was their first victory outside the country in their history!
After trailing at half-time, San Marino secured their second win of the competition thanks to penalty goals from Lorenzo Lazzari, Alessandro Gulinucci and Nicola Nanni.
The players of San Marino cheered on the field after being promoted to League 'C'. The Weeches' previous two wins were also against the same opposition. One was in a friendly in 2004 and the last in the Nations League last September. Both matches were played in San Marino. They also topped Group One of the 'D' League.
The tiny nation, ranked 210th, has lost 199 of 211 matches. Scored 10 or more goals in seven games. Under Roberto Sevoli, the team has two wins in 10 matches. Lichtenstein's position in the ranking is 200th.
This is the first time San Marino has seen three goals in an official match. Marco Tura, president of the San Marino Football Federation, said of the team's lackluster performance: 'Apart from suffering a serious heart attack, I can say the boys made history tonight. They have shown what they are worth. I cried with the boys.'
