New Delhi. Indian cricket team has to play in Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. After the shameful defeat from New Zealand, this Test series has become very important for Team India from the point of view of the World Test Championship. Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar has talked about announcing the name of the new captain for the series to be played on Australia tour. He has suggested making Jasprit Bumrah the captain of the team in place of Rohit Sharma. The news is coming out that Rohit will be out of the first two matches due to personal reasons.
While talking to Sports Tak, Sunil Gavaskar said that if there is doubt about the availability of captain Rohit Sharma for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, then the selectors should announce the name of a new captain for this series. 36 year old Rohit can join the team as a player later. If reports are to be believed, Rohit will join the Indian team later in the Australia tour after asking for a break from the management citing personal reasons. In place of Rohit, vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah can captain the team in the first match of the series.
Gavaskar said, “It is very important for the captain to play in the first Test. If he gets injured then it is a different matter. If your leader is not available in the first match, then appointing a deputy leader puts a different kind of pressure on him. It will not be easy for him to take the responsibility of captaincy again. We have read that Rohit Sharma will not play in the first test, perhaps he will not play in the second also. If it is so then I say that right now the Indian selection committee should say that you have to rest, take rest, if there are personal reasons then look at them.
He further said, “If you are missing two-thirds of the matches then you should go on this tour only as a player. We will make the vice-captain the captain of this tour, because there should be clarity. It is the responsibility of the captain because when we lost 3-0 here, it is important to have a captain. It is absolutely necessary,”
