Messi got a former teammate as a coach

Inter Miami revolves around Lionel Messi. His former teammates are being brought together in the Florida club. Stars like Jordi Alba, Luis Suarez and Sergio Busquets have arrived. This time Messi's former club and national team teammate was added to the dugout.

Miami's new head coach is Javier Mascherano. The former Liverpool, Barcelona and Argentina defender has been contracted until the end of the 2027 MLS season. This is his first coaching experience in club football.

Gerardo Martino stepped down last week for personal reasons after spending a year and a half with the Herons. He was replaced by Mascherano. He was the coach of Argentina U-20 team for the last three years. Under him, the team played in the last sixteen at the 2021 U-20 World Cup and lost to France in the quarter-finals at last summer's Olympics.

Although Mascherano has limited coaching experience, Miami co-owner Jorge Mas said he was brought in after discussions with Messi. The two played eight seasons together at Barcelona. Won five La Liga trophies in addition to the 2011 and 2015 Champions League. They were also Olympic gold winners in 2008, then played together in Argentina's jersey for many more years.

Mascherano will join the work in the pre-season. He will make his MLS debut next year.
