IND-W vs NZ-W: Indian batsmen's flop show, T20 World Cup started with defeat, New Zealand taught cricket lesson


New Delhi. India had to face defeat in its first match of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2024. New Zealand defeated India by 58 runs. In this match played on Friday at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, New Zealand's bowlers proved to be inferior to the Indian batsmen. India's star players Shefali Verma, Smriti Mandhana, captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues lost their wickets easily. The Indian team will face Pakistan in its second match on Sunday (06 October). Pakistan made a good start in the tournament by defeating Sri Lanka by 31 runs in the first match.

For India, captain Harmanpreet scored 16 runs, Jemimah Rodrigues and Deepti Sharma scored 13 runs each. Wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh scored 12 runs while Smriti Mandhana also contributed 12 runs. Shefali Verma returned to the pavilion after scoring 2 runs. For the Kiwi team, Rosemary Mair took the maximum of 4 wickets while Lee Tuhuhu took 3 wickets.

Sophie Devine hits half century
Earlier, thanks to the half-century of captain Sophie Devine (57 runs), New Zealand women's team scored 160 runs for 4 wickets. For New Zealand, Georgia Plimmer contributed 34 runs and Suzie Bates contributed 27 runs. Indian bowler Renuka Singh took two wickets for 27 runs while Arundhati Reddy and Sobhana Asha got one wicket each.
