Pakistani scientist Dr. Abdul Qadir Khan is considered the father of Pakistan’s nuclear program.

James Lawler, a former senior officer of America’s intelligence agency CIA, has made many revelations about the nuclear smuggling network of Pakistani scientist Dr. Abdul Qadir Khan.

Speaking to ANI, Lawler said that initially America thought that Qadir Khan was making nuclear blueprint only for Pakistan. But later it was revealed that he was illegally selling nuclear technology and weapons making materials to many countries like Libya and Iran.

“We woke up very late,” Lawler said. We had no idea that he would become such a big smuggler. On government collusion, Lawler said Khan used to bribe some Pakistani generals and leaders.

Lawler said that CIA Chief George Tenet informed former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf about the smuggling. Musharraf got angry after hearing this and abused Khan and talked about killing him.

CIA officer James Lawler called Qadir Khan a 'merchant of death'.

Qadir Khan is considered the father of nuclear program in Pakistan. At the same time, James Lawler is credited with dismantling the nuclear smuggling network of Qadir Khan. Lawler told that he had named Kadir Khan as ‘merchant of death’.

Qadir Khan’s smuggling network was spread across the world

Qadir Khan’s network was so big that he was illegally supplying nuclear bomb making machines, blue-prints, centrifuges and uranium enrichment technology all over the world.

James Lawler, a former officer of the American intelligence agency CIA, said that Qadir Khan single-handedly ran the world’s most dangerous nuclear black market.

Initially the CIA thought that Khan was only stealing goods for Pakistan, but in the 1990s it was discovered that he was also selling nuclear weapons.

Lawler said – created a fake company, gathered information about smuggling network

James Lawler’s team was assigned the task of penetrating Khan’s network. The team created fake companies in Switzerland, Germany, Dubai and Malaysia which looked completely genuine from outside. These companies started selling nuclear devices.

Khan’s people started coming to order from this company considering it to be genuine. In this way the CIA started gathering information about Khan’s entire network.

Lawler said, “If we wanted to defeat the smugglers, we had to become smugglers ourselves. Defective parts were sent from these fake companies. Centrifuges in countries like Iran and Libya kept breaking down again and again.

“Doctors take an oath never to harm a patient, we took an oath on the contrary – to always do harm,” Lawler said with a laugh.

Libya stopped its nuclear program after being caught in 2003

In October 2003, the CIA received news that a German ship BBC China was heading from Malaysia to Libya. It was loaded with lakhs of centrifuge parts, which had been sent by Khan’s network.

America stopped the ship in the sea near Italy, opened and checked all the containers and then loaded them in trucks and placed them directly in front of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

Lawler told that at that time there was so much silence in the room that the sound of a needle falling could be heard. Just a few months later, Libya stopped its entire nuclear program forever and handed over all the centrifuges, designs, everything to America.

“I was dancing with joy that day after those containers were emptied,” Lawler said.

Lawler said- Qadir Khan used to give bribe to Pakistani generals

Lawler also clarified that Qadir Khan had given huge bribes to some Pakistani generals and leaders, hence he continued to get protection.

He also told that in the 1980s, America needed Pakistan very much to fight the Soviet Union in Afghanistan, hence it deliberately ignored Khan’s work.

Lawler said – This was a big mistake, the consequences of which are still being suffered till today.

Gave nuclear bomb technology to Iran, still uses the same model

Lawler further said that even today Iran uses the same P-1 and P-2 models of the centrifuge design that Qadir Khan gave to Iran.

Lawler warned, “Khan had given Iran all the technology from A to Z of the nuclear bomb. If Iran makes a nuclear bomb, then Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt will all make their own bombs. The entire Middle East will be filled with nuclear bombs. It will spread like a nuclear epidemic.”

He stressed the need for deeper cooperation between India and America and said that if there is a nuclear war in South Asia, there will be only losers, there will be no winners.

Lawler said- India-America should fight against nuclear smuggling

Lawler said, ‘First of all, India and America have the same interests. India and America should fight together very strongly against nuclear smuggling and terrorism.

James Lawler served in the CIA from 1980 to 2005. Now he writes detective novels based on his stories. All novels are published only after passing the censorship of CIA.

In the end, he said that nuclear weapons cannot be completely eliminated, but stopping smuggling and preventing new countries from developing the bomb – this is the most important task even today.

Lawler, known by the nickname Mad Dog

Lawler is known by the nickname “Mad Dog”. He told that there was a funny story behind this also. While posted in France, a rabid German Shepherd dog attacked him.

Lawler joked, “If I got rabies, I’d make a list of people I would bite!” Since then all his friends started calling him “Mad Dog”, and they do so even today.

Born in Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh

Qadir Khan was born on 1 April 1936 in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. His family moved to Pakistan at the time of partition.

Dr. Qadir Khan was the first citizen of Pakistan to be given three Presidential Awards. He was awarded Nishan-e-Imtiaz twice and Hilal-e-Imtiaz once.
