Transactions from UPI reduced by 3 percent


In April, transactions through Unified Payments Interface (UPI) declined by 2 percent to Rs 17.89 billion, while value-wise transactions declined by 3 percent to Rs 23.95 lakh crore.

The year-end selloff led to a record performance in March with 18.30 billion transactions by volume and Rs 24.77 lakh crore by value, up 14 per cent and 13 per cent respectively from February, according to National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) data. Interestingly, in April 2025 there has been an increase of 22 per cent on number basis and 34 per cent on value basis as compared to the same month last year.

Kunal Jhunjhunwala, Founder, Airpay Payment Services, said, ‘UPI transactions are expected to continue to grow in May 2025. Digital payments in India are not only increasing but have also become a necessity in everyone’s life.

Daily transactions remained almost stable. It was Rs 59.6 crore in terms of number and Rs 79,831 crore in terms of value, which was earlier Rs 59 crore and Rs 79,910 crore.

Transactions through Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) also fell by 3 per cent to 44.9 crore in April, compared to 46.2 crore in March. It was Rs 40.5 crore in February. In terms of value also, it declined by 7 percent to Rs 6.22 lakh crore in April, which was Rs 6.68 lakh crore in March. In February it was Rs 5.63 lakh crore. Fastag transactions have increased marginally to 38.3 crore in April 2025, which was 37.9 crore in March. In terms of value it also increased to Rs 6,801 crore, which was Rs 680 crore in March. The number of transactions in February was 34.8 crore, with a total value of Rs 6,601 crore.

The figures for April 2025 are 17 percent higher in number and 22 percent higher in value compared to April 2024. Daily transactions increased to 127.5 lakh in April, from 122.3 lakh in March and 137.1 crore in February. On value basis also it has increased to Rs 227 crore per day, which was Rs 219 crore per day in March. Transactions through Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AEPS) declined by 16 per cent to 9.5 crore, from 1.13 crore a month ago and 9.4 crore in February. In value terms, it declined by 13 percent to Rs 26,618 crore in April from Rs 30,539 crore in March and Rs 24,410 crore in February. Daily transactions stood at 31.8 lakh, which was 36.5 lakh in March. If compared with the same period last year, AEPS transactions have increased by 2 percent in terms of number and 6 percent in terms of value.
