Amid the debate on increasing the working hours of employees, Radhika Gupta, MD and CEO of Edelweiss Mutual Fund and Anand Mahindra, Chairman of Mahindra & Mahindra Company, have shared their experiences on social media platform X.
Radhika Gupta said in her post that, during my first job, I worked 100 hours every week for four consecutive months on my first project. But, I was sad 90% of the time. At the same time, Anand Mahindra in his post has termed working for long hours as wrong and said that he believes in the quality of work, not quantity.
In fact, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Chairman SN Subramanian recently advised his employees to work 90 hours a week during an online conversation. He said that if possible, the company will make you work on Sunday also. After this, Radhika Gupta and Anand Mahindra shared their experiences.
Radhika said- I was at work for 100 hours, but I was not productive. Radhika is the first woman CEO of a mutual fund company in India. He said, 'I worked 18 hours every day with one day off during my first job. Then I got leave on Monday instead of Sunday, because I had to be at the client site on Sunday.
She told that at that time I was sad 90% of the time. I used to go to the office bathroom and cry. Once ate chocolate cake from room service at 2 am in the night and was admitted to the hospital twice. The special thing is that even though I was at work for 100 hours, I was not productive. Same is the story of many of my classmates who graduated with me, who were doing other work including banking and consultancy.
Radhika said- Not everyone wants to become a CEO and founder At the same time, Radhika Gupta said that hard work is an option, ambition is a choice and it has many consequences. Not everyone aspires to become a CEO or founder. I know many people who have chosen less demanding careers in their fields because time off from work makes sense to them.
Hard work does not equal hours worked Radhika Gupta said – I know a friend who created a screensaver with Excel models to make her boss believe she was in the office. Hard work does not equal hours worked.
Many developed countries work from 8 to 4, but ensure that they are productive during that time. He said to come on time and give your best in work. Hold only essential meetings and use technology to be effective.
The company manages funds worth more than ₹1 lakh crore According to the company's website, the asset under management (AUM) of Edelweiss Mutual Fund has crossed ₹1 lakh crore in November 2023. The company's AUM has increased 11 times in the last 5 years. The company currently has a portfolio of 84 mutual funds, which include equity, debt, hybrid and money market schemes.
Mahindra said- increasing working hours is wrong However, Mahindra & Mahindra Company Chairman Anand Mahindra has termed working for long hours as wrong. Addressing the Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue 2025 organized in Delhi, he said – Quality is important in work, not its quantity. So it is not a matter of 48, 40 hours, 70 hours or 90 hours. It depends on the output of work. Even if you work for 10 hours, what output are you giving? Can you change the world in 10 hours?
He said that the debate about increasing working hours is wrong. I greatly respect Infosys founder Narayana Murthy and others. So don't misunderstand me. I think increasing working hours is a wrong debate.
It is important to spend time with family Giving the example of its auto manufacturing business, Mahindra said that to make a car for the family, the needs of the family should be understood. Let's take our business, you make a car. We have to decide what the customer wants in a car.
If we're just in the office all the time, we won't be with our families, we won't be with other families. How do we understand what people want to buy? What kind of car do they want to ride in?

In response he said, 'I am sorry that I am not able to get you to work on Sunday. If I can get you to work even on Sunday, I will be more than happy, because I work on Sunday.
After this statement of Subramanian, the ongoing debate on work-life balance got a boost. This debate started after Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy suggested working 70 hours a week.
