The entry of Samajwadi Party and Asaduddin Owaisi in Maharashtra has increased the tension between Congress and NCP. If these parties enter the electoral fray, there may be a direct possibility of division of Muslim votes. If this happens then the election results on many seats may change.
At the same time, Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM can single-handedly field candidates on 45 seats in Maharashtra elections. In the last assembly elections, AIMIM had announced candidates for 44 assembly seats. Many of these seats are such that there are more than 30 percent Muslim voters. Owaisi's party AIMIM is trying to become kingmaker by getting the votes of Muslims, Dalits and backward classes.
In the last Maharashtra Assembly elections, 3 Muslim MLAs from Congress, 2 from NCP, 2 from Samajwadi Party, one Muslim MLA each from AIMIM and Shiv Sena had won. According to the 2011 census, there is about 1.5 crore Muslim population in Maharashtra. The number of Muslims is high in North Konkan, Khandesh, Marathwada and Western Vidarbha of Maharashtra.
Muslim community has an effective role in winning and losing about 40 assembly seats. In the last Maharashtra elections, 10 Muslim MLAs had won the elections. Of these, 3 won from Congress, 2 from NCP, 2 from SP, 2 from AIMIM and 1 from Shiv Sena.
