Top industrial conglomerate S Alam Group leader Mohammad Saiful Alam has written a letter to Bangladesh Bank Governor threatening to go to international arbitration. However, there is no reason to give importance to this threat, said the economist and the executive director of South Asian Network on Economic Modeling. Salim Raihan.
He said in the Shadow Parliament on 'Financial Sector Chaos: Political Involvement of Businessmen' organized at FDC in the capital today, there are serious allegations against S Alam Group like debt default, tax evasion and money laundering. Such activities are punishable offenses and legal action should be taken against them.
Dr. Salim also said, 'The financial sector has been disrupted by the combination of some bureaucrats, businessmen and politicians. In the past decade, the number of defaulters has exceeded all previous records. Such prevalence of corruption has caused lasting damage to financial sector policies. Bangladesh Bank must now be firm in establishing good governance and reveal the names of those involved in irregularities through a white paper.'
Dr. Salim called upon the younger generation to socially boycott corrupt businessmen and politicians. This will be a big step for good governance. He also points to the weakness of the country's judiciary in the past, which has protected such criminals.
Chairman of Debate for Democracy Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiran said, 'Thousands of crores of rupees have been looted with false development stories. People have been misled with fake figures of GDP of the country. Now is the time, the government should take strict measures against irregularities.'
The speakers at the event also said that the government should investigate the citizenship and money laundering allegations of S Alam Group leader Mohammad Saiful Alam and collect proper evidence.
Eden Women's College won the debate competition in Chhaya Sangsad and won the trophy defeating the team from Govt Titumir College. The event was cited as a positive example of raising awareness among the youth.
