Discount for families of martyrs in July coup by buying savings bonds

The family members of martyrs in the July coup are getting special benefits in buying savings bonds. These family members do not have to show proof of income tax return filing if they buy savings bonds with money given by the government.

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has issued a notification in this regard on Sunday (January 5).

According to the notification, the government has given financial assistance to 826 families of martyrs in the July coup. In case of purchase of savings certificate with this money, the income tax return filing certificate is exempted. The NBR has granted this exemption under the powers conferred by sub-section 4 of Section 264 of the Income Tax Act, 2023.

There are four types of savings bonds in the market. These are – Family Savings Certificate, Pensioner Savings Certificate, Five Year Bangladesh Savings Certificate, Three Month Profit Based Savings Certificate. Apart from this, the post office also has storage facilities.

Meanwhile, the government has ordered not to provide reinvestment facilities to institutional investors in savings bonds. The central bank has given instructions to the commercial banks to comply with the matter. The Debt Management Department of Bangladesh Bank gave this instruction on the instructions of the Ministry of Finance.

As per the guidelines, institutional investors will not get the benefit of reinvestment in savings bonds. Only individual investors will get it. Apart from this, Bangladeshi sailors (mariners) working in international seagoing ships and Bangladeshi pilots and cabin crew working in airways companies can invest in Wage Earners Development Bonds. These things were unclear for so long.
