The government has decided to buy 5 thousand tons of sugar from City Sugar Industries of the country. This sugar will be procured locally through open tender (national). The price of sugar per kg has been fixed at 120 taka 90 paisa. The total cost for this will be 60 crore 45 lakh taka. This sugar will be sold at a subsidized price through the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) on the occasion of the upcoming month of Ramadan.
On Wednesday (November 6) at the secretariat under the chairmanship of Finance and Trade Advisor Saleh Uddin Ahmed, the government procurement advisory council committee meeting approved the purchase of sugar.
According to the sources of the meeting, TCB has a target of buying one lakh 44 thousand metric tons of sugar in the financial year 2024-25. As a part of that, in view of the total demand, it has been decided to purchase 5 thousand metric tons of sugar locally with the aim of selling TCB products at subsidized prices every month among about one crore low-income families with TCB family cards all over Bangladesh (including city corporations and municipalities).
It is known that the tender evaluation committee recommended that the company will supply 5 thousand metric tons of sugar in 50 kg bags. The office price of sugar per kg is 123 taka 87 paisa. Accordingly, since the responsive bidder mentioned the price of 120 taka 90 paise, the evaluation committee gave their opinion that this sugar will be available less than the office price by 2 taka 97 paise.
A meeting of the Advisory Council Committee on Government Procurement discussed the overall issue and the committee approved the purchase of 5,000 tonnes of sugar from City Sugar Industries.
