Counterfeit, counterfeit, substandard, unauthorized and expired cosmetics are increasing in the country with the demand. Bangladesh is like a dumping station for these foreign products. Due to not taking strict measures for prevention, day by day the market is profiting from these products. A large amount of low-quality adulterated cosmetics are smuggled into the country from abroad. On the one hand, consumers are facing health risks by using fake and substandard foreign products, as well as the domestic industry sector is suffering.
The speakers said these things at the seminar on 'Dumping station of substandard foreign products or quality products of the latest technology: Context Bangladesh' jointly organized by the National Directorate of Consumer Rights Protection and the Association of Skincare and Beauty Products Manufacturers and Exporters of Bangladesh at Karwan Bazar in the capital on Thursday.
Director General of National Consumer Rights Protection Directorate Mohammad Alim Akhtar Khan said domestic products can contribute the most to the country's economy. For this, import dependence should be reduced. You cannot compete with the world if you cannot produce products yourself. If people loved everyone as themselves, they would not be able to cheat in the production of goods. If world class cosmetics and home care products are produced in the country, employment of people will also increase with it.
Economist Professor Dr. Muhammad Mahbub Ali said that a huge amount of money has gone abroad due to the import of substandard foreign goods. But of late, some domestic companies have started producing international products. The products of these companies have been able to gain trust in the local market with the latest technology. They have already responded by marketing quality products in their own factories. One of them is Remark HB. Customers are expressing satisfaction using their products.
Ishakul Hossain Sweet, former director of FBCCI, said that because domestic companies like Remark-Harlan produce quality authentic products, interest in using domestic products is increasing among buyers. Government policy support needs to be increased to encourage more investment in this sector.
Ali Zaman, president of SME Owners Association, said Bangladesh has become a dumping station for foreign products as quality products have not been produced in the country for a long time. Such a situation cannot continue. Fortunately, quality products are now being produced in the country, and the interest of buyers is also increasing. So the government should take the initiative to increase people's confidence and trust in quality products produced in the country.
Jamal Uddin, general secretary of Association of Skincare and Beauty Products Manufacturers and Exporters Bangladesh, said that the Directorate of Consumer Rights Protection is working to prevent adulteration. As a result, awareness has increased among people. Demand has been created for latest technology products. The people of the country want to see their more effective role in preventing the profit of substandard foreign products. Domestic investment will be at risk if marketing of substandard products is not prevented through strict enforcement of laws.
