The number of tourists arriving in Egypt is expected to reach its highest levels ever this year, according to statements by the Egyptian Minister of Tourism in an interview with Al-Sharq on the sidelines of the World Travel Fair in London, anticipating receiving economic flights from China and Scandinavian countries.
Sherif Fathi, Egyptian Minister of Tourism, expected that the number of tourists by the end of the year would reach approximately 15.3 million tourists, an increase of 5%? from the previous year. This is the highest level ever, after the number of tourists arriving to the country last year recorded its highest level in the history of Egyptian tourism at 14.91 million, despite the tensions that the region witnessed in the last three months of 2023, with the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas on October 7. .
Fathi pointed to efforts to target the Chinese market in the coming period, and explained that the upcoming promotional campaigns will depend on social media and artificial intelligence. The number of incoming flights is expected to increase, especially since airlines from Scandinavian countries and China will open direct economic airlines to Egyptian airports, according to the minister.
Egypt previously expected the number of tourists this year to reach 18 million, but unrest in the region may hinder achieving this goal. Also, the government aims to increase tourism sector revenues from the average currently estimated at about $12 billion annually, to $30 billion annually during the next three years.
The Minister of Tourism described the occupancy rates as “high,” and explained, “On average, they are more than 75%. They vary from one region to another, and in some places they reach more than 90%.”
