After a long wait, electricity supply from Nepal to Bangladesh has started


According to the tripartite agreement, electricity supply to Bangladesh has started from Nepal through Indian grid. On Friday (November 15) in a virtual ceremony in the presence of the concerned ministers of the three countries, the power supply started. Altogether they will send 40 megawatts of electricity to Bangladesh.

In the event, Bangladesh's electricity-fuel adviser. Fawzul Kabir Khan, India's Power Minister Manohar Lal and Nepal's Energy Minister Deepak Khadka participated.

In May-June this year, the then Prime Minister of Nepal, Pushpa Kamal Dahl, during his visit to India, announced a tripartite agreement on the supply of hydropower to Bangladesh.

It is known that the agreement was signed in the presence of the environment advisor Rizwana Hasan in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal on October 3. Power companies of three countries — Bangladesh Power Development Board (PDB), Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), Vidyut Vapor Nigam Limited (NVVN) of India signed the tripartite agreement.

Under this agreement, 40 MW of electricity will be supplied from Nepal to Bangladesh through India for five months from June to November.

Syeda Rizwana Hasan said in her speech that day, 'This agreement is an important step in the expansion of regional energy trade. It is not only a matter of meeting immediate power needs, but also a process of ensuring long-term and environmentally friendly energy security of our countries.'

The cost of electricity per unit is set at 6.4 cents ($1 per 100 cents). In Bangladeshi currency which is about seven and a half taka.
