Out of 401 factories in Savar, Ashulia and Jirani areas, 12 garment factories have been closed today (November 19). Apart from this, all the factories covered by the Association of Made Garment Exporters (BGME) in other parts of the country are open.
Based on the information received till noon on Tuesday (November 19), a report from BGMEA informed this calculation.
According to BGMEA, among the closed factories, four factories have been closed due to worker dissatisfaction, i.e. under Section 13/1 of the Labor Act. Apart from this, 11 prisons in Kashimpur and Jirani areas were declared closed due to workers' agitation demanding outstanding salaries of Beximco Group.
It has been learned that since Tuesday morning, the workers of two factories in Jirani and Chakraborty areas of Gazipur city have been protesting by blocking the Chandra-Navinagar highway for various demands including one month's arrears.
Workers said there are 41 thousand workers in clothing and ceramic factories in Beximco Industrial Park. Meanwhile, the workers of RMG factory have been blocking the road for a week and demanding payment of the arrears of the last month.
On the other hand, the workers of the Dorin factory in Jirani area have been protesting by blocking the same highway since this morning demanding the layoff of 13 staff and the opening of the factory.
Due to the dissatisfaction of the Beximco factory workers, several factories in the vicinity including Sarabo and Jirani have been closed indefinitely.
According to BGMEA, workers of Beximco Group attacked various factories to demand their outstanding salaries for the month of October. Another 10 factories have been closed in such a situation. Among them are ongoing labor unrest at Doreen Garments, Doreen Apparels and Doreen Fashion. Besides, factories of IRIS Fabrics, KAC Composite, Exaco Limited, YP Gazipur Limited, Hamim Group's That's It Knitwear, Auto Tech Limited and Uttara Knitwear have been declared closed in Sarabo and Jirani areas.
Besides, a factory called 'Sadatia Sweater' is closed in Ashulia area.
According to the information of BGME, out of 2 thousand 93 factories under the organization, 101 factories have not paid salary in October and September salary has not been paid in one factory.
