- Car Inspection Is Necessary Before Delivery In Festive Season, Keep These Things In Mind, Otherwise New Car Can Become Trouble
Vehicles are being purchased during the festive season. If you are also planning to buy a new car, then it is important to take some precautions before delivery.
Here we are telling you what precautions should be taken before buying a car. How to deal with a car dealer and why Pre Delivery Inspection (PDI) is necessary before taking delivery of the car from the showroom and how it is done…
First of all let us know what is PDI?
PDI means Pre Delivery Inspection. This is a process in which an inspection facility is provided before the delivery of the car. In this, the interior, exterior, engine and all the features of the car are checked whether they are working properly or not. PDI is done in two ways.
- The dealer himself does the PDI. After thorough checking, the PDI badge is put on the car, which shows that the car is ready for delivery.
- Before taking delivery of the car from the dealer, the customer can also do the PDI of the car himself and check everything at his level.
Why is PDI necessary, when and where should it be done?
By doing PDI it can be known whether there is any problem with the car. The car dealer already knows what the problem is with the car and how to hide it from the customer before delivery. Therefore, PDI of the car should be done even before the vehicle is registered.
PDI of the car should be done in a place where there is good lighting. This makes it easier to see all the parts of the car. It would be beneficial to take along an expert, mechanic or someone with knowledge about cars. Even if you don't find an expert, you can do it yourself.

Step-1: Make a check list
- First of all make a check list. In this list, note down each and every point to be checked in the car like engine, exterior, interior, tyres, features, paint of the car etc. The advantage of this list will be that nothing will be left out.
Step-2: Exterior
- Go around the car and see if there are any scratches or dents in it. Pay special attention to the bumpers and sides of the car.
- Dealers polish the car to hide minor scratches. These scratches start appearing after one or two washings.
- For this, try moving your hands over the entire body of the car. If there is a dent or scratch due to this, it will be caught. This will make the paintwork visible.
- Look at the body closely and from a side angle. Due to this, if re-painting has been done somewhere then the color difference will be visible.
- Check all the corners of the car like door edges and panel gaps, window surrounds and front bumper.
- When a car is parked for a long time, tires go flat. The tires of a new car may also be mutilated.
- Check all four tyres, also the rim and alloy wheel. Check the stepney properly, also check the jack and other tools.
Step-3: Interior
- Inside the car, thoroughly inspect the dashboard, upholstery, seats and glovebox.
- Remove the floor mat and check if there is any moisture or dirt in the carpet.
- Also check all the mirrors of the car whether there are any cracks or scratches in them.
- Check all the switches in the car. Check whether they are working properly or not.
- Turn on the air conditioner (AC) and check whether the cabin cools down quickly or not.
Step-4: Engine, odometer and fuel
- Open the bonnet of the car and check its fluid levels. Engine oil, coolant, brake fluid and windscreen washing fluid must be filled.
- Start the engine and let it run for a while. Check under the bonnet for any leaks or hear any unusual sounds or vibrations.
- Apart from this, put your foot on the accelerator pedal and accelerate two-three times and listen to the sound of the engine. There is no black smoke coming out from the engine.
- The odometer reading of a new car should not be more than 30-50 km. If the reading is more than 30-50 km, talk to the dealer about it.
- Dealers provide 5 liters of complimentary fuel to customers. Check the fuel level and see if there is enough fuel to reach the nearest fuel station.
Step-5: Car Documents
- Check all the papers of the car like registration certificate, insurance cover, manuals, warranty card, roadside assistance number and service book.
- Make sure to get 'Form 22' from the dealer and check it, it contains information about the car's engine number, chassis number and the month and year of car manufacturing.
- Check whether the vehicle identification number (VIN), engine number and chassis number of the car matches with the documents provided by the dealer.
Step-6: Take a test drive
- Do take a test drive once with the dealer representative. During the test drive, check the steering, gearshifter, brakes and suspension of the car.
- Keep in mind that the car is not making much noise and check that the car is not vibrating too much. Also notice the engine noise.
Step-7: Make video of inspection
Get that car registered in your name only after checking everything. After registration, keep an eye on that car. Do not let the car go back inside the service center. If you have to send the car inside, send someone else along. If you want to be more secure, make a video of the entire inspection.
What to do after taking delivery of the car
After purchasing a car, its invoice (bill) should be checked thoroughly. Many dealers initially quote the on-road price of the vehicle after adding insurance and RTO charges to the ex-showroom price.
When we see the bill after purchasing a car, we see many hidden charges, such as file charges, service charges, handling charges and accessories charges. Overall, hidden charges of around Rs 5-10 thousand are imposed. Please note that service charge is illegal.
If you see such charges in your bill, then raise your objection immediately or clear it to the dealer at the time of booking that you will not pay any hidden charges.
Know these important tips also…
- If the dealer stops you from doing PDI then there is something wrong with the car. You can refuse to buy such a car.
- If there is any major problem in PDI then it would be wise not to buy such a car. This may increase your expenses in future.
- The biggest advantage of doing pre-delivery inspection is that you avoid getting a defective or damaged vehicle.
- Many times, due to a small mistake, one has to suffer loss or have to make trips to the showroom later.

- First decide the budget and choose the car accordingly. Apart from this, one should always choose the car according to one's need. Do not finalize the deal from a single showroom, to get a better deal, finalize the deal by taking quotations from three-four more dealers.
- Whatever car you are going to see in the showroom, get complete information about it from the salesman, ask about all the features and engine. Choose only that variant whose features you can use regularly. Apart from this, do a test drive of the car also.
