Prabhjit Singh, President of Uber India and South Asia, said that Shikara booking can now be done on Dal Lake in Srinagar through Uber's app. The company has started this first service of its kind in Asia. Singh said, “'Uber Shikara' is our attempt to blend technology and tradition to give passengers a seamless experience of riding a Shikara. We are proud to provide this service that will increase access to the breathtaking landscape of Kashmir and promote tourism.”
An Uber spokesperson confirmed that Uber's water transportation service in India is also the first of its kind in Asia. The company offers water transport booking in some European countries including Venice, Italy. In India, the company has initially inducted seven Shikaras and plans to gradually expand the fleet depending on the popularity of the service.
Uber users will be able to book shikaras at rates set by the government. A company spokesperson said that Uber is not charging any fees from its Shikara partners and the entire amount will be passed on to them. Wali Mohammad Bhatt, president of the Shikara Owners Association, said there are around 4,000 shikaras in Dal Lake and he hopes Uber will rope in more shikara partners.
