The rupee opened at 84.87 per dollar in the interbank foreign exchange market, which is its lowest ever level against the dollar. The rupee had closed at 84.85 against the US dollar on Tuesday.

The rupee fell by two paise to its all-time low of 84.87 against the US dollar in early trade on Wednesday. Forex traders said a subdued trend in the domestic market and overall strength of the US dollar index put further pressure on the rupee.

The rupee opened at 84.87 per dollar in the interbank foreign exchange market, which is its lowest ever level against the dollar. The rupee had closed at 84.85 against the US dollar on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the US dollar's position against six major currencies, was down 0.07 per cent at 106.32. International standard Brent crude stood at $ 72.61 per barrel with a gain of 0.57 percent. According to stock market data, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were buyers on Tuesday and bought shares worth a net Rs 1,285.96 crore.
