Emphasizing the importance of innovation and the role of the North-East in the textile industry, Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh said he is planning to open campuses of the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in foreign countries. Singh was addressing the inauguration program of NIFT's permanent campus in the Meghalaya capital. During this time, the 12th convocation ceremony was also organized for the graduating class. On this occasion, the Textiles Minister promised to take the department to a nationally and globally recognized level.
He praised NIFT's VisionNext initiative and said that he is planning to set up NIFT campuses in foreign countries. He also urged the students to promote India brand and green sustainable textile products globally. Encouraging NIFT graduates to accept future challenges, he said, the future of fashion is in your hands. He also advocated the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the design process, reiterating the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Highlighting the importance of needing technical tools in design, Singh said, we must equip our students with tools and technology to preserve their creativity. He said that by the year 2030 this industry will reach 350 billion dollars. He said that handloom, technical textiles and handicrafts contribute more than Rs 45,000 crore to exports. Referring to the importance of the North-East region, Singh said, North-East plays an important role in our billion-dollar market. Union Minister of State for Textiles Pabitra Margherita and Meghalaya Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh also participated in the event.
