The chief advisor to the nation. The political parties have expressed their disappointment as there was no clear announcement about the election in the speech given by Muhammad Yunus.
On the occasion of the 100-day anniversary of the interim government, Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus. Speaking about the election, he said, 'The election train has started. It won't stop. But we have a lot of work to do as we go along. When this train reaches its final station will depend on how soon we can lay the rail lines for it. And that will be through the unity of political parties.
BNP Vice Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu told Ajker newspaper in reference to the chief adviser's statement about the election, 'The countrymen want to know clearly on which day and in which month the election will be held. Except the day-month-time, he (Chief Adviser) said everything else. What is necessary, that is not known.'
This leader of BNP also said, 'He (Chief Adviser) talked about the election. But he did not reveal when it will happen. It would be better to clarify that. Reforms and elections go hand in hand. If we do whatever reforms are needed for elections, we are happy, the countrymen are happy. But if that is not clear, then the complexity is likely to increase.'
However, BNP's Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said, 'The work that needs to be done to establish a strong democracy. I believe he (Dr. Yunus) will do that in that case. He will work in harmony with the hopes and aspirations of the nation from the responsibility given by the nation after the end of the dictatorship. Where democracy can be further strengthened. I believe that he will stay on this path.'
Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami urged to clarify the statement of the head of government. The party's Naib Amir Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher said, 'Our point is clearly that the roadmap for reforms and elections should be made clear to the people as soon as possible. We think that it is not possible for the interim government to reform everything. They should be more focused on the election process by making urgent reforms, such as Election Commission reform, Judiciary reform, some constitutional reforms. We are not disappointed by the speech of the head of government. But I would request him to make his statement more clear.'
Saiful Haque, the leader of the like-minded Jot Demokrat Manch, which is agitating simultaneously with the BNP, and general secretary of the Revolutionary Workers Party, said, “He (the chief adviser) has said that the election train has started.” If the people and politicians were given an idea about the last station of this train, the uncertainty about the elections would have been reduced a lot. He did not mention any specific time of the election. A place of ambiguity remained. There is an opportunity to create confusion in the people and political circles about it.
He said, 'Elections will be held within the next year, even if something like this was said, the countrymen, voters or political parties would have been relieved. Then it would have been understood whether we would need three months more or three months less.'
