Tariq Rahman's call to start a new chapter in history

Tariq Rahman reacted to the acquittal of the August 1st grenade attack case. On Sunday (December 1) at 7:25 Bangladesh time, the Acting Chairman of BNP gave this response on his social handle X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook. There he called for an end to political vendettas and a new chapter in history.

The Bengali translation of the status given in English is, 'The beauty of truth is that it finally triumphs over propaganda and conspiracy, giving us the belief that justice and righteousness are finally established.'

'Let us end political vendettas and start a new chapter in history, where no one's life or family is destroyed because of political differences.'

In the status, he promised, 'We pledge to embrace the spirit of democracy that thrives on pluralism, diversity of beliefs and ideologies, which will empower the people of Bangladesh to determine their own future through electoral participation.'

“On this journey, we will strive to establish the rule of law, human rights and freedom of expression, which will secure the rights and freedoms of every citizen and build an inclusive, tolerant and orderly society,” said BNP Acting Chairman Tariq Rahman.

After Tariq Rahman's status, BNP leaders and activists are reacting on their social media. Some young leader commented on Tariq Rahman's status below, 'We are waiting for your return to the country.'

Incidentally, the High Court acquitted all the accused including Tariq Rahman, who was sentenced to life imprisonment and former Minister of State for Home Affairs, Lutfuzzaman Babar, who was sentenced to death in the much-discussed August 11 grenade attack case. The High Court bench comprising of Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain announced the verdict by canceling the judgment of the judicial court.

On October 10, 2018, the judicial court sentenced 19 people to death, including former state minister for home Lutfuzzaman Babar and BNP leader Abdus Salam Pintu. At the same time, 19 people including Senior Vice Chairman of BNP (currently Acting Chairman) Tarek Rahman were sentenced to life imprisonment. Another 11 accused were sentenced to different terms of imprisonment. Later, on November 27 of that year, the judgment of the trial court in the case reached the death reference wing of the High Court along with the necessary documents. In addition, the imprisoned accused appealed. In December 2022, the appeal hearing of this case started in the bench led by Justice Sahidul Karim. Meanwhile, the bench was reconstituted. Due to this, the hearing started again in the new bench.
