We don't want the kind of student politics that exists which brings the students out of the study table and into the sweet canteen to give protocol to the leaders. Student politics should be for the benefit of students. It should be Daksu-centric rather than laziness, said the student leaders.
Leaders of various student organizations said these things while participating in the policy dialogue titled 'Question of Student Politics after Mass Uprising: Intention to Find a New Form' organized by 'Dialogue for Democracy' in front of Dhaka University's self-earned independence sculpture on Thursday (December 12) afternoon.
Convener of anti-discrimination student movement Hasnat Abdullah, Member Secretary of National Citizen Committee Akhtar Hossain, Secretary General of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir Zahidul Islam, President of Dhaka University Branch of Bangladesh Student Union Meghmalla Basu and student of Sociology Rafia Rehnuma Hridi participated in this policy dialogue. Chhatra Dal general secretary Nashir Uddin Nashir was supposed to participate but he did not come.
Hasnat Abdullah said in the dialogue, 'There should be student politics on campus but not laziness. We don't want student politics which forces us to take out our reading tables and give protocols to leaders in honey canteens. The existing party student politics has deprived the students of their rights. Student politics where the students were supposed to talk about various problems including hall accommodation crisis, food quality, they occupied the common room and did seat politics.'
He said, 'Party student politics has capitalized on students and used them to keep their mother party in power. Student politics should be Daksu-centric.
Zahidul Islam said, 'Mawdudi said that student politics is a form of worship. In other words, we think that student politics should be done with sincerity as we do other forms of worship. If we study the student politics in different countries, we will see that they conduct constructive activities. But that doesn't happen in our country.'
Mentioning that politics should be kept open in all forms, Basu of Meghmallar said, 'The CR Council is formed after the CR is elected in the democratic process. But the Constitution of Daksur must be reformed.'
Akhtar Hossain highlighted the persecution of Chhatra League in the name of student politics. Narrating his experience, he said, 'I was beaten by checking my phone. We have grown out of the politics of phone checking and beating. We don't want that politics anymore. Student politics should be for students, for students' rights.
Rafia Rehnuma said, 'We have seen the terrible form of student politics in the past. Students have been victimized by this politics the most.'
