Singapore High Commissioner Derek Low met BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir. The meeting was held at the chairperson's office in Gulshan on Sunday (November 10) morning.
Also present during the meeting was High Commission's Charge of Affairs Mitchell Low, Singapore Foreign Ministry Desk Officer Rahul Abraham. BNP Secretary General was accompanied by Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Member of the Standing Committee of the party, Enamul Haque Chowdhury, Member of the Chairperson's Advisory Council, Shama Obaid, Member of the International Relations Committee.
After the meeting, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said in a press briefing, 'It was a courtesy meeting. There have been lengthy discussions on matters of interest between the two countries. They believe that there are decisions to be made on various issues including economic activities between the two countries. In that case, they feel that it is easier to take those decisions if there is an elected government in Bangladesh. They also think that without an elected government it is not possible to carry forward economic activities.
“There was a discussion about how we can send skilled labor there (to Singapore). For example, while Singapore needs a lot of nurses, other sectors have an incentive to hire skilled workers. Singapore wants to invest through various institutions, provide technical assistance to further skill our labor force. Amir Khusro added.
He said, 'Singapore is very efficient in port management. They have expressed their interest to cooperate in making our country's ports operational. Singapore also wants to cooperate in health, education, shipbuilding industry. They also said to work in the energy and financial sectors.'
