'One must not forget, don't make political party an opponent'

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir believes that the great liberation war of 1971 should not be forgotten. Besides, he thinks that the statement of interim government adviser Nahid Islam should be withdrawn. “Please don't make political parties or politics your adversary,” he said.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made this comment in a discussion meeting on the occasion of Martyred Intellectuals Day on Friday (December 13) afternoon. This discussion meeting was held on the occasion of Martyred Intellectuals Day organized by BNP at the Engineers Institution Auditorium in the capital. On Saturday (December 14) intellectual day at 11 am, BNP leaders will pay floral tributes at the Mirpur Martyr Intellectual Memorial.

“Political parties are trying to prove the failure of the interim government,” said Information and Broadcasting Adviser. Responding to Nahid Islam's statement, Mirza Fakhrul said, 'When an adviser says that political parties are working to fail the interim government – it is a grave accusation. I strongly condemn and protest against it. He should retract such statements.'

“Don't make political parties or politics your adversary. Political parties are helping you…. If there you say it is working to fail…. Our chairman said, we have said thousands of times, failure of this government means the people will fail, we will fail. Then why do you say such things?'

Paying respect to martyr intellectuals and sector commander of liberation war Ziaur Rahman, Mirza Fakhrul said, 'There is now a tendency to leave seventy-one behind. It is part of another conspiracy. Removing the nation from the original history of the country…. We have to be vigilant about this matter.'

BNP Secretary General warned, 'Our original history, today is independent Bangladesh, we are dreaming of a new Bangladesh through the mass uprising of 24 by bringing this history. Let's not distort that history. History has been distorted for 15 years, so that history is not distorted now, I request everyone to be vigilant.'

Addressing the activists, BNP Secretary General said, 'To pay respect to those who have left us, let us take this oath – we will develop ourselves as a citizen of a useful state, as a worker of democracy and as a worker of BNP.'

Mirza Fakhrul said, 'We are talking about democracy, that democracy is not a word. It's a culture, it's a culture. How to talk to you-I, how to talk to my neighbor, how to talk to my political opponent, we have to learn those things through democracy.'

'Democracy does not mean that Awami League should cut his throat; And if BNP does, behead him. Democracy is absolute tolerance. You have the right to speak, you have the right to speak against me. I will protect it, this is democracy.'

Mirza Fakhrul said, 'Now is the most difficult time. If you make a wrong move, fall behind, fall into the pit. If you can step correctly, then move forward.'

Referring to Martyred Intellectuals Day, he said, 'You should not neglect these days, try to know them. Many do not know what happened. Is that day a day of clapping, or not a day of clapping; Is that day the day of meeting, or the day of eating khichuri…. The most distinguished people of our country, the best teachers of Dhaka University were taken away.'

BNP Secretary General said, 'They have been taken away. The fascist government would have taken us away. They would have lost us, just like that they (martyred intellectuals) have been taken away. At the time of taking it from home, it was asked, where are you taking it. They said, they will come after a while. This is how it was taken. After taking it did not come back. Their bodies were found with their hands and feet tied in Rai Bazaar. We have to remember that intellectuals had to give their lives.'

'There were still rooms like mirror rooms. Why have the boys been taken to the mirror? Why have political activists been taken? There was only one purpose, to frighten, to finish, to destroy. Why? Hasina's power should be made permanent, for that she would have been taken to the mirror' – added Mirza Fakhrul.

BNP Secretary General, who returned home from London on Thursday, said, 'We have to step cautiously every moment now. We need to measure every word. We will not say anything that spoils our victory, destroys our achievements.'

Abdul Moin Khan, Salahuddin Ahmed, Selima Rahman, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Economist Professor Mahbubullah, Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Professor Mamun Ahmed and others spoke at the discussion meeting moderated by BNP's Publicity Secretary Sultan Salahuddin Tukur.
