Don't do anything that makes the nation lose faith, Mirza Abbas to interim government

Mirza Abbas, a member of BNP's standing committee for the interim government, said, 'Today the situation in the country is chaotic. Things may get murkier ahead. We want to believe that this government will definitely show a light of hope to the nation. But don't do anything that will make the nation lose faith in you.'

He said these things in a discussion meeting at Dhaka Reporters Unity in the capital on Tuesday.

This leader of BNP asked the interim government to clarify about the date of the elections and said, 'What reforms do the interim government want to make in the state structure and how many days will it take to do that? Make it clear without any pretense and immediately announce the election date.'

Mirza Abbas said, 'I will tell the interim government, don't leave the nation in the dark. The people of the country did not respect the government led by Awami League for the last 16 years without voting. Now this government will not be accepted for long. You can do whatever you want by keeping the nation in the dark, the people of the country cannot accept that.'

Pointing to the statement of the energy adviser, this member of the BNP standing committee said, 'Currently we do not see any signs of reform. You are not talking about the election. When we talk about elections, you say that we are eager to come to power. Now if we say, you are crazy to stay in power without talking about elections.'

Mirza Abbas said, 'It has been three months since the interim government was formed. But still our cases including acting chairman of BNP Tariq Rahman have not been withdrawn. But you can issue an ordinance and withdraw all the cases against BNP and opposition party leaders from 2007 till the fall of the Awami League government. But not doing that. May or may not.'

Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, a member of the BNP's standing committee for the government, said at the event, 'There is a murky situation in the country at present. I do not understand whether this government will stay for a long time or will leave on time. I do not understand whether you want our cooperation or not.

He said, 'This government is the product of the students' movement, the product of their blood. It is the expectation of the countrymen from this government that they will organize elections as soon as possible after the necessary reforms towards elections. If the government fulfills this duty properly, they will shine in history.'
