Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal DU branch has demanded to reform its constitution before Dhaka University Central Student Council (DACSU) elections. Along with this, a demand has also been made to reduce the power of the vice-chancellor in the student council. At that time, it was said by the party that the president of Daksu should be elected directly by the students.
On Wednesday (January 15) these demands were announced in a press briefing organized by the DU branch Chhatra Dal on Daksu. The student organization has proposed 18 amendments for the university parliament and 9 for the hall parliament in the Daksu proposal.
DU Chhatra Dal president Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahas said in the briefing that it is not possible to fulfill the expectations without DACSU election as per the rules. Our reforms, if implemented, will bring benefits to students and people in general. Constitutional reforms are needed to implement DAKSU. And the Vice-Chancellor of DU being the guardian of Daksu without being an elected representative is a reflection of autocracy. The Chhatra Dal also demanded to publish the complete voter list 30 days before the Daksu election and to keep an opportunity for appeal.
At that time, General Secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon said that the current constitution of Daksu is not able to meet the needs of ordinary students, it needs to be reformed. Voters and candidates should be open to all regular students without age limit of 30 years.
Demanding that the post of DACSU president should be elected directly among the students, he said that there should be effective participation of student representatives in every decision of DU.
Earlier at 3 pm, the organization gave a memorandum to the vice-chancellor regarding Daksu election and Daksu reform proposal to the register. In their memorandum, they said that the Dhaka University Ordinance 1973 has been amended to regulate the regular elections of the Dhaka University Central Student Council (DACSU) and the Executive Committee of the Hall Councils and all decision-making forums of Dhaka University, such as student representatives elected to the Syndicate, Academic Council and Senate. Direct inclusion of provisions on representation.
At least 60 days prior to the election of the Executive Committee of Daksu and Hall Parliaments to replace the existing Syndicate and create an Interim Syndicate with neutral members. In light of the events that happened in the 2019 Daksu elections, to ensure every voter's right to vote fairly and peacefully, polling stations should be set up in academic buildings instead of residential halls.
Demanding publication and finalization of voter list at least 30 days prior to election of Executive Committees of Daksu and Hall Parliaments and a transparent appeal process in this regard, it is further said, a dedicated Pran Daksu website for publication of manifesto, communication and election news of Executive Committees of Daksu and Hall Parliaments and Creating official accounts on various social media, so that it is easier to prevent rumors or misinformation about it.
