The hearing of Jamaat leader ATM Azharul Islam's verdict (review) appeal for the crimes against humanity during the War of Liberation has been postponed till Wednesday.
The Appellate Division led by Chief Justice Syed Rifat Ahmed fixed the day for the next hearing on Wednesday after a partial hearing on Tuesday.
Barrister Ehsan A. Siddique heard on behalf of Azhar today. He was accompanied by lawyer Mohammad Shishi Monir. At this time, the Appellate Division listened to the appointment of senior lawyer Prabir.
At the hearing, Ehsan A. Siddique said it was a trial of the International Crimes Tribunal. But the international law was not obeyed here. The testimony here has been accepted. However, the laws and criminal procedures were not followed.
Earlier, the Appellate Division fixed February 26 for the hearing on January 26. However, even though there was a sequence of number 7, Azhar's appeal was not heard as the court's hours were completed through the hearing of the previous case.
The International Crimes Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam raised the issue of the review application last Sunday morning. Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman said they did not object to the hearing. Later, the Appellate Division fixed the day on Tuesday (February 26).
The International Crimes Tribunal sentenced ATM Azharul Islam to death on December 7 in the case of crimes against humanity. The Appellate Division upheld the death sentence on October 7, when appealed against it. The appeal was then filed in the Appellate Division on July 7, 2012, seeking the review of the verdict.
