26 people including BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia have been acquitted in the case of attack and attempted murder of former Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan. On Wednesday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sharifur Rahman accepted the final report of the case and released them from the responsibility of the complaint.
Notable people who have been exempted are BNP Vice Chairman Selima Rahman, Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Uddin, Jatiyatavadi Mahila Dal General Editor Shireen Sultana, Advocate Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas and others.
Recently, investigation officer Detective (DB) Police Inspector Abdus Sobhan filed a final report requesting the release of 26 people including Khaleda Zia as no evidence of involvement in the incident was found in the investigation. Today the accused were acquitted after accepting the investigation report.
The complaint in the case said that on February 16, 2015, Muktijoddha Parishad gathered in Gulshan to besiege the BNP Chairperson's office. After the rally, 20 to 30 thousand ordinary people led by former Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan left to surround the BNP Chairperson's office and the accused threw bombs at them with the intention of killing them. BNP and its organizational leaders-activists participated in this attack on the orders of BNP leaders including Khaleda Zia.
In that incident, the then General Secretary of Dhaka Vehicle Union, Ismail Hossain Bachchu filed the case against 14 people including BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
According to the investigation report, the truth of this incident was not found during the investigation. No witness testified during the investigation.
