Today is Jail Murder Day

Today, November 3 (Sunday), is Jail Murder Day. One of the scandalous days in the life of the Bengali nation. On this day in 1975, Bangladesh's First Interim President Syed Nazrul Islam, Prime Minister Tajuddin Ahmad, Cabinet member Captain M Mansoor Ali and AHM Kamruzzaman were brutally murdered while incarcerated in Dhaka Central Jail. Such a hellish killing in a high-security prison is unprecedented in the history of the world. Following the brutal killing of Bangabandhu and his family on the dark night of August 15, 1975, four such leaders were hacked to death with bayonets within three months.

The case filed in connection with this brutal murder is known as jail murder case. In this case, the number of accused sentenced to life sentence by the court is 8. Three accused have been sentenced to death. Out of these 11 convicts, 10 are out of touch.

Captain (retrieved) Abdul Majed was absconding for a long time among the life sentence convicts. He is also a death sentence accused in Bangabandhu murder case. After returning home, he was caught in April 2020 and executed in the same month.

On November 4, 1975, the then Deputy Inspector General of Prisons Kazi Abdul Awal filed the case in Lalbagh Police Station regarding the killing of four national leaders. The investigation of this case was stopped for 21 years. After Awami League came to power in June 1996, the proceedings of the case started. After 29 years, on October 20, 2004, the Metropolitan Sessions Judge of Dhaka announced the verdict of the case.
