The Election Commission (EC) will not collect the information of citizens who are eligible to vote from door to door this year. However, after March 2 next year, the EC will go door-to-door to collect voter information for the voter list of 2026.
And before announcing the schedule of all types of elections, the commission has taken a policy decision to list the eligible voters.
Election Commissioner Brigadier General (Retd.) Abul Fazal said this information after the first meeting of the AMM Nasir Uddin Commission at the election building of Agargaon on Monday. Sanaullah
However, there was no discussion about the election in the meeting.
Commissioner Sanaullah said, 'Currently we have 1.7 lakh information, which we will insert on January 1. They will be registered as new voters. However, from our past experience, this data is not always complete. Because, many people come to the office and do not complete the registration process. This number could have been approximately 45 lakhs.'
Sanaullah said, 'Out of the 1.7 lakh data we have, we collected 1.3 lakh data in 2022. And only 4 lakh registered voters this year by coming to various offices. That is, we can see that approximately 27 to 28 lakh voters are not registered, but are eligible to vote. In this reality, we have decided that our renewal process for this year will be completed.
The Election Commissioner said that after the publication of the draft on January 2, the final voter list will be published on March 2 after the hearing, claims and objections. But those who are left out, we want them to be included in our voter list. For this we decided to go door to door and collect their information. Apart from these excluded voters, we will collect the information of those who will be voters in 2025, i.e. those who will be voters till January 1, 2026. The benefit we think we will get from this is that we can check our voter list. Going door to door will make it easier to eliminate dead voters. If there is duplication or any problem I can overcome it. It may take us six months to go home. This six month period has nothing to do with updating our voter list.
The Election Commission wants to ensure that those who are adults and those who are eligible to vote on January 1 and later on January 1, 2026, should not be left out.
When will the home update be started? In response to such questions from journalists, the Election Commissioner said, 'It will be fixed from the secretariat. We want to start the work as soon as possible. The program, which is up to date on January 1, will end on March 2. So we will have only one voter list. We feel the need to go door to door again, we think 25 to 27 lakh voters who have not come to the office to be registered, we want them to be registered. That's why going from house to house. And since we are going from house to house, we will also take next year's data, till January 1, 2026.
“Whenever an election comes up, the Election Commission will try to list those who are eligible to vote even if a special ordinance is issued before the schedule is announced.”
When asked about the possible time for door-to-door data collection, the commissioner said, 'It will be briefed by the secretariat. We are thinking that we will be able to start after March 2. We have to complete this process by March 2.'
The Election Commission has taken the initiative to update the voter list. Meanwhile, the political parties want the election as soon as possible. Has there been any discussion on the outline of the election in the meeting? To such a question, the Election Commissioner said, 'We have not had any discussion about this today. Didn't discuss it at all.'
