Political thinker Prof. Abul Kasem Fazlul Haque has commented that a new constitution is needed for a permanent solution in the management of the state. He said, 'The current interim government is seeking reforms to run the current constitution. We can get on with it somehow, but for a permanent solution we need a new constitution.'
Professor Fazlul Haque said these things at the seminar titled 'Constitution for Citizen Empowerment' at the National Press Club on Friday (November 15). It was organized by an organization called Citizen Power.
Abul Kasem Fazlul Haque said, 'I am not saying that there will be no more problems if there is a new constitution. New constitution may create new problems. But in reality the people really need a new constitution.'
ABM Mosharraf Hossain, BNP's training affairs secretary, said in the seminar, 'This interim government has accepted the current constitution by taking oath at the hands of the president. So the revolutionary government was not formed. BNP thinks that the elected parliament has the right to make and rewrite the constitution. So now there is an opportunity to reform this constitution to the maximum extent.
Referring to the constitution of the three states after the revolution, Dhaka University professor Ruhul Amin said, 'The constitution of America is only 16 pages, China's 26 pages, Iran's 35 pages. But the constitution of Bangladesh is more than two and a half hundred pages.
This professor also said, 'We talked about rewriting. I am with Bastapcha constitution. I say, float it to pieces in the Bay of Bengal.'
Asaduzzaman Fuad, Joint Member Secretary of Amar Bangladesh (AB) Party commented that the constitution that was written after independence is inconsistent with the Declaration of Independence. He said, 'Some policies have been added, which are in conflict with the desire for freedom. This constitution is a personal loot of the Sheikh family and a fascist arrangement to run the country.'
National Liberation Council general secretary Faizul Haque said, 'Maulana Bhasani protested that the constitution of 72 was anti-people. This constitution has been canceled through the July revolution, because if the constitution was followed, there would not have been a revolution.'
However, the secretary general of the Khilafat Majlis, Ahmad Abdul Quader, is different. He said, 'It will take time to rewrite the constitution. So now it is necessary to change the basic clauses of the constitution. Islamic values should be kept in the constitution and fallen things like socialism should be excluded.
