Rangamati Medical College was established on January 10, 2014. Even after 10 years of its establishment, the permanent campus of the medical center has not yet been constructed. The class activities of the students are going on in a five-storey building rented by the hospital. The medical students said these things in the sit-in program organized to demand the construction of a permanent campus in the premises of Rangamati central Shahid Minar on Saturday (September 14) noon.
The fifth year students of Rangamati Medical College Tanvir Ahmed, Salma Afrin, fourth year students Arnab Chakma, Tanvir Hossain, third year students Abdul Hakim, Ferdous Yusuf and second year student Emdadul Haque Naeem etc. spoke in the program.
The speakers said that the Rangamati Medical College has been facing various challenges since its inception. Teaching was suspended for the first three months after its establishment due to various obstacles from local mountain organizations. Later, in the face of the movement of students and parents, Rangamati Medical College started its activities in a temporary campus in a coronary unit in a five-storey building of Rangamati Sadar Hospital with 51 students. Although students are admitted every year, many important departments have not yet been launched.
Due to lack of adequate classrooms, auditorium, library, modern labs and sewage system for the students in this medical college, the learning environment is being disrupted. There are no adequate hostels to accommodate the students. As there is no alternative arrangement, classes, examinations and office activities are going on under the same roof. As a result there is frustration among students and concerned.
The speakers also said that currently a place has been decided for the permanent campus in Sukhinilganj area of Rangamati city, they were informed that the work of land acquisition and design of the medical college has been completed. However, there is no prospect of building a permanent campus or hospital yet. Not the rented campus building, we have to explain our rights. We need to ensure permanent campus.
