BNP standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed commented that the PR (proportional representation) system in the context of Bangladesh and political culture is not suitable. Calling this process' complicated ', he says,' Those who are saying about the election at a proportional rate have a purpose. Those who want local government elections before the national elections have little purpose. Either the elections are delayed or the elections are not in Bangladesh. '
Salahuddin Ahmed said this while addressing reporters after the unveiling of the Memorial Publications and Archives at the International Mother Language Institute at Segunbagicha in the capital on Saturday afternoon.
In response to various political parties' statement on the PR system, he said, “Anyone can raise as a political demand, it is their political right. However, it does not make sense to impose it on everyone. A team can ask for their position. But in the reality of Bangladesh and the discussion of the Reform Commission with us in the past, we have not received any consensus on the election system. Apart from this, there is no proportional election history in Bangladesh and there is no history of parliamentary politics and parliamentary elections. This is a new idea in the political culture of Bangladesh. For which many tests have been done in many countries of the world. As we have seen, this does not apply to this country. '
Salahuddin said, “We are united in Bangladesh, all the democratic people of this country have struggled not for local government elections. We have struggled for 5 years for a free, fair, neutral national election. We have to lose numerous lives for the voting rights. '
Salahuddin Ahmed said, “Voters in any parliamentary area will not know who will be their MP in proportionate elections. Besides, they will go to the MPs if needed, they will not find any designated person. '
Responding to a question regarding the election program in February 2021, Salahuddin said, “The proposal for the election program in February next year will be effective when he (the chief adviser) gave the message to the Election Commission through proper process. When the Chief Advisor and the Election Commission will be informed by the nation, we will be convinced that we are getting the election at that time. '
On this day, Jamaat -e -Islami Secretary General Mia Ghulam Parwar said, “People will not accept the election without the PR system by attending the Islamic Movement of Bangladesh in the capital's Suhrawardy Gardens.”
The Islamic Movement organized the convention at Suhrawardy Gardens demanding the necessary state reform, the trial of those involved in the past massacre and organizing national elections in the PR system. At the General Assembly, the Islamic Movement of Bangladesh (Charmonai Pir) Mufti Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim said, “There is no alternative to the election without the PR system.” In order to prevent the depreciation of the people's vote, the PR system should be introduced in the parliamentary elections.
