Former Secretary of Election Commission arrested in Bangladesh – Bangladesh Election Commission former secretary Jahangir Alam arrested by police

Several bureaucrats and top police officers were arrested after the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government. Jahangir Alam, the former secretary of the Election Commission, has been arrested this time. Police said he was arrested from Gulshan area of ​​Dhaka on Tuesday. However, the police did not tell why he was arrested until 3 pm. The twelfth national election of Bangladesh was held in January of this year. Jahangir Alam served as the Secretary of the Election Commission at that time. Later on May 21, a notification was issued to transfer him to the Public Security Department of the Ministry of Home Affairs. The order came into effect from May 30. Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government appointed him as joint secretary in the home ministry. He was forced to resign on August 14 after the fall of Hasina's government.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Police Commissioner Talebur Rahman said that he was arrested from Gulshan area on Tuesday morning. He told the police officer why he was arrested. However, in a statement sent to the media by the police, Jahangir has been referred to as the 'artisan of dummy elections'. The DMP also said that the process is under process in which case he will be arrested.

It is known that Jahangir Alam started working as an officer of BCS 13th batch administration cadre. He started his career in Khagrachari in 1994 as Assistant Commissioner. In 2022, he was promoted from the Additional Secretary of the Public Security Department to become the Secretary of the EC. He was later returned to the Public Security Department.

Along with Jahangir Alam, former member of Parliament Abdullah Al Islam alias Jacob was also arrested today. He is former Member of Parliament from Bhola-4 Constituency. He also served as deputy minister once. Police said that he was also arrested from Gulshan area.

Incidentally, since the fall of Hasina's government, murder cases have been filed one after another against ministers, MPs and Awami League leaders of her tenure. More than 200 murder cases have been filed against Hasina. Sedition cases have even been filed against three persons who served as Chief Election Commissioner during his tenure. A person named Ekramul Karim filed the case against three persons including Kazi Habibul Awal.
