Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris are fighting to win the presidential election in the United States. Like the rest of the world, Bangladesh is closely monitoring the US election. Whoever wins the election on November 5 (Tuesday), the impact will be felt around the world. According to experts, there is no chance of any change in the US foreign policy if the incumbent Democrat Kamala Harris wins. And if the Republicans win, there may be changes in some areas as well as changes in their approach and way of doing things. However, according to them, even if Donald Trump wins, the United States will not make any major changes in its attitude towards Bangladesh.
In this regard, a former diplomat told the Bengali Tribune, 'One of the biggest foreign policy strategies of the United States is the Indo-Pacific Strategy. No matter who wins, that will not change.'
Stating that there is a consensus between both US political parties on the strategy of containing China through the Indo-Pacific strategy, he said, 'The United States sees Bangladesh through the Indo-Pacific lens. As there is no possibility of a change in China containment policy, there will not be any major policy change regarding Bangladesh.
Note that Bangladesh is located in the Indo-Pacific region.
Trade and Investment
Bangladesh's largest export market is the United States. At the same time, the United States is the biggest investor in Bangladesh. They have big investments in the energy sector.
Another former diplomat said, 'Republicans are more interested in business and trade. Bangladesh is interested in getting a loan from the United States Development Finance Corporation. But the Democrat administration is not interested in this. If the Republicans come to power, there may be a possibility of changing their views on this matter.'
human rights
One of the most important issues in US foreign policy is human rights. Democrats are more interested in enforcing it. Republicans, on the other hand, do care, but not as much as Democrats.
In this regard, a former diplomat said, 'In the case of countries like Bangladesh, the issue of human rights is tried to be raised in a big way if the democrats are in power. Its level is lower for Republicans. Therefore, if Donald Trump comes to power, it can be assumed that Bangladesh will have to face less questions about human rights.
Relations with India
The US and India have a strategic relationship. But if you analyze the relationship between the political leadership of the two countries, it will be seen that the relationship between the Republican candidate Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is very deep.
Another former diplomat said, 'Donald Trump made a tweet on October 31 saying that Hindus are being attacked in Bangladesh. The same tweet also mentions that he has a very deep relationship with Narendra Modi.'
The tweet received 25,000 comments, 87,000 retweets, 386,000 likes and 30.3 million people, he said, 'If Donald Trump wins, the relationship between India and the United States will deepen. As a result, the dependence of the United States on India may increase regarding Bangladesh.
