Bangladesh and Australia are keen to work more closely in bilateral, regional and international forums. This interest was expressed in the fifth 'Foreign Office Consultation' held between the two countries on Tuesday (November 26) at the country's Foreign Office in Canberra, the capital of Australia.
In this meeting, the delegation of Bangladesh was led by the Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Bilateral East and West). Md. Nazrul Islam and Australia's delegation was led by First Assistant Secretary of the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs Sarah Storey.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting held in a very sincere atmosphere based on mutual understanding discussed the development partnership, strategic and regional issues, immigration, civil maritime cooperation, security and military cooperation and increasing cooperation between the two countries in various fields including international forums.
In the meeting, gratitude was expressed to the Government of Australia for its ongoing cooperation in development activities since the independence of Bangladesh. On behalf of Bangladesh, Australia's expert and technical cooperation is sought in the fields of agriculture, education, blue economy, energy and information technology. At the same time, a more active role of Australia in their repatriation is desired for a sustainable solution to the Rohingya problem.
Reiterating Australia's steadfast support to the interim government of Bangladesh, Australia also sought Bangladesh's cooperation in curbing irregular migration, transnational organized smuggling and human trafficking. Besides, the development in the economic and social spheres of Bangladesh was appreciated. During the meeting, Australian representatives expressed their keen interest to work more closely on matters of mutual interest.
Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to tackling global environmental challenges with special emphasis on climate change. Referring to the issue of Bangladesh's vulnerability to the adverse effects of climate change, Australia's commitment to continue cooperation in dealing with this problem was expressed.
Besides, Indo-Pacific perspective, counter-terrorism and multilateral issues of mutual interest were discussed. The meeting reflected the determination of both countries on peace, security and development of the region. On the occasion, satisfaction was expressed regarding the development of bilateral relations between the two countries and areas of future cooperation were identified.
Enthusiasm was expressed in the meeting to strengthen the relationship between the two countries as well as to face mutual challenges. In addition, regular communication between the leaders and officials of the two countries, including the exchange of visits by high-level representatives, was emphasized for the development of bilateral relations.
High-level officials of the High Commission along with the relevant ministries and departments of both countries were present in the meeting. The next meeting of Foreign Office Consultation will be held in Dhaka in 2025.
