Attack on Bangladesh Mission in Agartala was consented to: Ministry of External Affairs

The Government of Bangladesh is deeply angered by the violent protest and attack by a large group of protesters of 'Hindu Sanchash Samiti' in Agartala on Monday (December 2) afternoon at the premises of the Assistant High Commission of Bangladesh in Agartala, Tripura, India.

According to accounts of the incident, the Bangladesh government believed the protesters were allowed to attack the premises.

A press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday (December 2) said that the details received proved that the protestors had been given premeditated permission to break down the main gate of the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission and attack the premises. In the process, they vandalized the national flag pole in the presence of members of local law enforcement agencies, desecrated the national flag of Bangladesh and also damaged property inside the Assistant High Commission. Unfortunately, the local policemen in charge of guarding the premises were found to be inactive in controlling the situation from the start. Members of the Assistant High Commission suffer from deep insecurity.

The government of Bangladesh wishes to emphasize that this brutal attack on a diplomatic mission of Bangladesh and the desecration of the national flag of Bangladesh set a pattern of similar violent protests in Kolkata on November 28, 2024, the release said. Agartala claims that this particular law violates the inviolability of diplomatic missions, as per the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, 1961.

It further said that since it is the responsibility of local governments to protect diplomatic missions from any intrusion or damage, the Government of Bangladesh has urged the Government of India to take immediate action to counter the incident. It also demanded a thorough investigation into the incident and prevention of any further violence against Bangladesh diplomatic missions in India and protection of diplomats and their families.
