Fisheries and Livestock Adviser Farida Akhtar urged to speed up fisheries research to meet the nutritional needs of people and keep the taste of fish intact. He made this call as the chief guest at the workshop titled 'Annual Research Progress (2023-24) Review and Planning (2024-25)' organized by the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI) at Sech Bhavan on Manik Mia Avenue in the capital on Wednesday (November 20) afternoon.
According to the notification sent by the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, the Fisheries and Livestock Adviser urged the BFRI to conduct research on the availability of any type of fish in the country. He said, research-based maps should be made. This will be very helpful especially in informing future generations about fish. BFRI's journal may be published in English as well as Bengali to make it understandable to the readership.
Farida Akhtar said that the waste of various industries is polluting the rivers. As a result, various types of fish diseases and even fish are dying. As a result of climate change, brackish water is mixing with fresh water. He urged BFRI to research what kind of problems fish are facing in various adverse environments and to eliminate them.
At the event, the secretary of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, ATM Mostafa Kamal, said that the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute has brought back many lost indigenous species of fish. BFRI needs to research how to increase domestic fish production and reach more fish to common people.
