Israeli forces have recently stepped up attacks in southern Lebanon. There they are fighting fiercely with Hezbollah. There is almost daily firing on the border between the two sides. Israeli forces have called on UN peacekeepers to leave their positions, but UNIFIL has said it will not leave the southern region.

Unifil, on the other hand, reported a major loss at one of its positions. The blast occurred due to shelling at an installation in Ramiah village. UNIFIL calls on all parties to protect peacekeeping forces.

Israeli forces on Friday claimed responsibility for injuring two Sri Lankan peacekeepers, saying their forces opened fire after detecting a threat. A high level investigation has been announced in this incident.

Two Indonesian peacekeepers were wounded Thursday when an Israeli tank fired at an observation tower. Ireland's defense chief, General Sean Clancy, said it was not an accident, but a deliberate attack.

The leaders of France, Italy, and Spain strongly condemned Israel's actions and called for an immediate end to these attacks.

Currently, around 10,000 UNIFIL peacekeepers and 800 civilian personnel are serving in southern Lebanon.
