Attack and Looting at Former Chhatra League Leader’s House

An incident of attack and looting took place at the house of Sourav Das, the former Deputy Secretary of Religious Affairs of the Central Committee of the Bangladesh Chhatra League. Additionally, threats to the lives of his family members have been reported. The attack occurred on the night of September 6, around 2 AM, at Abdul Gofur Sarkar Lane, Shambuganj Middle Market, under the Kotwali Police Station area.

Since the incident, the family members have been living in constant fear for their lives. Sourav Das, the son of a retired school teacher, is a former student of Dhaka University and has previously served as the Deputy Secretary of Religious Affairs of the Bangladesh Chhatra League’s central executive committee. It is reported that the attack on his home involved severe vandalism, looting, and an attempt to set the house on fire.

According to the victims, Sourav Das’s residence, located in the aforementioned area, is where he lives with his wife and other family members. On the night of September 6, at around 2 AM, unidentified assailants unexpectedly launched an attack on their home, causing massive destruction, theft, and attempting to set the property on fire. As the family members tried to resist, Sourav’s father, Bhupendra Chandra Das, was severely injured by blows from sticks and is currently undergoing treatment. The identity of the attackers has not yet been determined. As of this report, a written complaint has been filed with the Mymensingh Sadar Police Station, naming unknown suspects.

It is worth mentioning that following the large-scale anti-government protests by students in July and August of this year, the government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, which was ousted on August 5, saw widespread attacks, vandalism, and arson targeting the homes and businesses of current and former leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organizations across the country.
