Annual allocation is more than Tk 200 crore, yet Bangladesh Betar has no audience

In 1996, during the rule of Awami League, a 16-member autonomy policy formulation commission was formed with the then secretary and media personality Asafuddaulah as the chairman. This commission presented a report with recommendations for full autonomy of radio and television in the reality of Bangladesh in light of the experience of visiting some countries including UK, India, Philippines. As noted in the first part of that report the following year, the changing state of the world, the free flow of information and the expansion of free skies made it inevitable that freeing radio and television from government control was inevitable in this age. So the sooner these two mediums are given autonomy, the better. The image of the country will also shine in the outside world.

Professor Shamim Reza of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism of Dhaka University has researched community radio. When asked whether such a media like Bangladesh Betar will run with people's tax money because it is a propaganda machine of the government, or if any kind of change is required for it, he said. Prothom-aloWho said, the editing method of Bangladesh Betar should be changed. Financial aspects should be autonomous. He will not think of changing the program, news content if he does not put Betar under competition.

Shamim Reza also said that since the organization is too bureaucratic, there is no continuity among those who work here. The recruitment rules of the organization should be changed. It is possible to run the organization even with 1/10th of the present manpower, if they are efficient. Can be autonomous if needed. But accountability must be ensured.
