Remove the 1972 Constitution, make a new one; Protestors surround Bangladesh President's building, demand resignation

Bangladesh's Rashtrapati Bhavan 'Bangabhavan' has been surrounded by protesters. They are demanding the resignation of President Mohammad Shahbuddin. This demonstration is taking place under the leadership of the country's student movement 'Anti-Discrimination Student Movement', which had earlier come into the news for demanding the removal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

On Tuesday, a large rally was organized at Shaheed Minar in Dhaka, where the protesters put forward their 5-point demands, the main demand of which is the resignation of the President. The protesters then marched towards Bangabhaban at night, but had to face barricades put up by the army. Now the protesters are raising slogans outside Bangabhaban and demanding the resignation of the President.

“The President is a supporter of Sheikh Hasina's dictatorial government. She should resign immediately,” one protester said. Mohammad Shahabuddin is also known as Chuppu. He is the 16th President of Bangladesh and was elected unopposed in 2023, having been nominated by the ruling Awami League.

The protesters' demands include abolishing the 1972 Constitution and drafting a new Constitution in line with the reality of 2024. Also, they have demanded a ban on the Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student organization of the Awami League, and declaring the previous elections (2014, 2018, and 2024) illegal. Apart from this, there has also been a demand to disqualify the MPs who won these elections.

The protesters have also demanded the declaration of a new republic in the spirit of the July-August rebellion. The protests began in July, when students demanded an end to the quota system in government jobs, but it soon turned into an anti-government movement.

As the protests intensified, Sheikh Hasina, 76, resigned as Prime Minister of Bangladesh on August 5 and moved to India. Subsequently, an interim government was formed under the leadership of Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus, and on 8 August Yunus was sworn in as the head of the interim government of Bangladesh. The situation still remains tense and strong protests continue from protesters, whose main demands center on the resignation of President Shahabuddin.

In an interview with a Bengali daily last week, Shahabuddin said he had no documentary evidence that Hasina stepped down as prime minister before she left the country amid massive student-led protests in August. Had resigned. Protester Naseeruddin Patwari said, “The President is an ally of fascism. He was in favor of genocide. We demand his resignation.

A group of protesters under the banner of 'Shadhinota-Shorbobhumotto Rokkha Committee' (Committee for the Defense of Independence and Sovereignty) staged a sit-in at the Dhaka University campus, demanding the resignation of Shahabuddin and the abolition of the constitution and the establishment of a “revolutionary government”. There was a call for the formation of. The protesters also demanded a ban on the political activities of Hasina's Awami League party and its allies.
