Comilla is drowning in hills, people are leaving their homes

Incessant rains and mountain runoff coming down from India are increasing the water level of Gomti river in Comilla at an unusual speed. In the meantime, the water of this river has crossed 50 cm of the danger level. Water has also started entering the locality. As a result many houses were damaged. Already, the people along the river have started leaving their homes and moving to safer places. Those who have nowhere to go are taking shelter in the dam.

Several teams of the army are monitoring the river protection dam said Comilla Deputy Commissioner Khandkar Mu. Mushfiqur Rahman.

It has been informed by the district administration that the dam has been kept under observation to see if it has been damaged anywhere. Some vulnerable areas of the dam have been temporarily repaired. This disaster has been caused due to continuous rains and the rise of Gomti river in the Indian hills.

According to local sources, heavy rains and Indian floods have inundated most of the border areas of Chauddagram, Burichong, Devidwar Upazila and Kankri and Gomti rivers. About half a million people in these areas are trapped in water. The people of the villages along the Dakatiya river in the southern part of Nangalkot upazila have been stuck in water for two days.

Khan Mohammad Waliuzzaman, executive engineer of Paubo, said, 'Sand bags are being given to the problem areas of the Gomti river protection dam. About 10 to 15 cm of water is rising every hour. Now the water has crossed the boundary. If the water continues to rise like this, it can be a threat to the dam.
He urged the people of the river banks to be alert and not panic. This Pubo official urged to inform the Pubo or the local administration if there is a risk or a crack in the dam.

People concerned said that Gomti Char of Adarsh Sadar, Burichong, Brahmanpara, Devidwar, Muradnagar, Titas and Daudkandi areas of the district were submerged in water since Tuesday night.

Debidwar Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Nigar Sultana said that some parts of the dam are dangerous. Since morning, sandbags are being dumped at the vulnerable points of the dam.

Meanwhile, people trapped in water in Gomti Char in Adarsh Sadar Upazila of the district have been evacuated to a safe place. The district administration has opened three shelters with their help.

Comilla Deputy Commissioner Khandkar Mu. Mushfiqur Rahman said that the district administration, pubo, army and upazila administration and union parishad of related areas are working to protect the Gomti river dam.
