Will Sheikh Hasina's troubles increase? Bangladeshi agencies may seek help from Interpol for arrest

The troubles of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina seem to be increasing. According to Bangladeshi officials, the agencies are considering seeking help from Interpol and other international agencies to arrest Sheikh Hasina and 45 leaders of her party. An arrest warrant has been issued against Hasina in her trial for alleged crimes against humanity.

According to local media, the chief lawyer in this case Mohammad Tajul Islam said that our agencies can use Interpol or other methods to arrest Sheikh Hasina. He said that if law enforcement agencies report that the accused are abroad, we will request the tribunal to direct the state to bring them back.

Tajul said that the tribunal headed by Justice Mohammad Ghulam Murtaza Majumdar passed this order. The prosecution had filed two petitions in the tribunal in this regard and appealed to issue arrest warrants against Sheikh Hasina and the leaders. He said the tribunal had also directed to arrest the concerned leaders and 46 others including Sheikh Hasina and produce them before it by November 18.

So far, more than 60 complaints of enforced disappearances, murders and mass killings have been filed with the tribunal against Hasina, her Awami League party and other leaders of the 14-party alliance, journalists and former top officials of law enforcement agencies. Apart from this, there are about 200 cases registered against Hasina, most of which are related to the murders that took place during the mass student protests.

Due to the student movement that started during July-August regarding reservation, Sheikh Hasina had to leave the post of Bangladeshi PM and flee to India. According to the Bangladeshi government, more than 600 people lost their lives in this movement. The army took command on August 5 after Hasina fled to India. Under pressure from students, an interim government was soon formed under the leadership of Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. Sheikh Hasina's plane, which came to India on August 5, landed at Hindon airbase near Delhi. At present he is at a safe place. Even before this, Sheikh Hasina had spent about 6 years as a refugee in India.
