This is the first time that an African country has won the presidency of the union and hosted this conference. The International Gas Conference is the most prominent global event in the gas and energy industry, as it brings together the largest experts and decision-makers in this industry to contribute to shaping its future.

The elected President of the International Gas Union and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Egyptian Gas Association, Engineer Khaled Abu Bakr, said: “I would like to extend my sincere thanks and appreciation for the success achieved by the Egyptian government in supporting and following up on this nomination, especially the Ministers of Petroleum and Foreign Affairs. This success reflects the pioneering role that Egypt plays regionally and globally in securing and diversifying energy sources.”

Abu Bakr added: “Our future vision for the energy sector revolves around three main goals: enhancing energy security by improving the gas infrastructure in ineligible areas, ensuring the ability to deal with price fluctuations, and enhancing sustainability through developing the infrastructure for green hydrogen, methanol, and clean energy, which will enable Contributes to reducing emissions. These goals reflect Egypt’s firm commitment to developing the sector in a diversified and environmentally sustainable manner.”

He continued: “Egypt will work side by side with the Italian Presidency of the International Gas Union through the position of Vice President from 2025 until 2028. I will be honored to assume this position, and Egypt will work in full coordination and cooperation with the Italian Presidency of the Union to ensure the achievement of the desired goals.”

Based on this vision, Egypt’s hosting of the 2031 World Gas Congress will provide a global platform to highlight its leadership in energy transition, scientific innovation, and technological developments. Abu Bakr has long and rich experience that enables him to hold this position, as he served as a member of the International Gas Union Council from 2009 to 2024, in addition to holding the position of Regional Coordinator for Africa and the Middle East for 12 years.

Under his leadership, Egypt will assume the presidency of the International Gas Union with an ambitious vision of “Alignment for a Sustainable Future,” focusing on achieving a delicate balance between economic prosperity, social security, and environmental protection, fully in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). .

The election results were announced during the IGU Council meeting, held in Cairo from 14 to 18 October 2024. This gathering provided a vital platform for industry leaders to connect, exchange ideas and collectively address the pressing challenges facing the global gas industry. .
