Chief Justice DY Chandrachud has sent a recommendation to the Central Government to make the second senior Justice of the Supreme Court, Sanjiv Khanna, the Chief Justice (CJI). Chief Justice Chandrachud is retiring on 10 November 2024. Justice Khanna will become the Chief Justice from November 11. His tenure will be about 6 months. Justice Sanjeev Khanna will retire next year on 13 May 2025.
Justice Sanjeev Khanna was born on 14 May 1960. He was registered as an advocate with Delhi Bar Council in the year 1983. He initially practiced in the district courts located at Tis Hazari Complex and later moved to the Delhi High Court and tribunals.
He served as Senior Standing Counsel in the Income Tax Department for a long time and in 2004 he was appointed Standing Counsel (Civil) for the National Capital Territory of Delhi. He has appeared and argued in many criminal cases as Additional Public Prosecutor and Amicus Curiae in the Delhi High Court.
In 2005, he was promoted as Additional Judge of Delhi High Court and made a permanent judge in 2006. As a judge of Delhi High Court, he has also held the post of Chairman/Incharge of Delhi Academy, Delhi International Arbitration Center and District Court.
