Kaptai Lake

The authorities of Kaptai Water Power Plant said that there is no danger of water release from Kaptai Lake in the next 24 hours. The water level in Kaptai Lake is still at least 5 feet below the danger mark. The manager of the power plant, ATM Abduzzah, confirmed this information on Thursday (August 22) afternoon.

According to the Kaptai Power Plant Authority, the water holding capacity of Kaptai Lake is 109 feet MSL (Means C label). As of 3 p.m. Thursday, the lake is slightly above 103 feet. As a result, the water is still at least 5 feet below the danger mark. Authorities consider releasing the water when the water mark comes within 108 feet.

It takes at least 10 to 12 hours for every foot of water to rise. As a result, there is no danger of water release from Kaptai Lake in the next 24 hours. If the rain continues and the water level of the lake approaches 108 feet, a decision will be taken to release the water after a meeting with the district administration.

Manager Abduzzah said that at least 6 hours before the release of water from Kaptai Lake, the issue will be announced in the media.

The coastal areas of the country have been experiencing continuous heavy rains for the past few days. This has increased the water level of local rivers including Kaptai Lake.

If the water of Kaptai Lake is released, there is a risk of flooding in the lower part of Karnaphuli River, Rangunia, Raujan, Hathazari, Boalkhali upazilas. Besides, there may be erosion of Karnaphuli river.
