Flood due to heavy rains in Sri Lanka, destruction in many areas; 3 people died and 1 lakh displaced

Heavy rains caused floods in many parts of Sri Lanka. Schools in the capital Colombo and suburban areas were closed on Monday. According to Sri Lanka's Disaster Management Centre, heavy rains over the weekend have wreaked havoc in many parts of the country. Here houses, fields and roads have been submerged. 3 people have drowned in the flood, while about 1 lakh 34 thousand people have been affected by it. The Center said 240 houses have been damaged by rain and floods. About 7 thousand people have been evacuated from there. Authorities have cut off power supply in some areas as a precautionary measure.

According to the country's meteorological department, heavy rainfall of more than 100 mm is expected at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, North-Western, Northern provinces, Galle and Matara districts. Naval and Army personnel are deployed to rescue the victims and provide food and other essential items. Local television channels showed flooding in suburban areas of Colombo. In some areas, water reached the roofs of houses and shops. The situation in Sri Lanka is bad due to monsoon rains since May. In June, 16 people died due to floods and landslides.

If we talk about political turmoil, the new government of Sri Lanka has ordered the police to re-investigate some high-profile cases, including the 2019 'Easter Sunday' terrorist attack and the murder of a journalist from the Tamil minority community in 2005. Case is also included. The ruling National People's Power, which won presidential elections last month, has promised to re-investigate previous cases that were not resolved. The Ministry of Public Security has taken this decision so that any lapse in investigation can be identified. The cases to be re-investigated include an alleged scam in the issuance of Central Bank bonds in 2015. The then government of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe was blamed for this.
