The US State Department said, “India had established a committee to investigate the activities of certain organized criminals and is actively investigating the individual, identified in a Justice Department indictment last year as an Indian government employee.” He was accused of directing a plot to assassinate an American citizen in New York City, but the plot failed.

Case of alleged conspiracy to murder Gurpatwant Singh Pannu

The State Department said, “India has informed the United States that it is continuing its efforts to investigate other connections of the former government employee and will determine further action as necessary.” In fact, in November last year, US federal prosecutors had accused Indian citizen Nikhil Gupta of working with an Indian government official in a conspiracy to murder Sikh separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannu in New York. Gupta was arrested in the Czech Republic in June last year and extradited to the US on June 14. India has denied the allegations but has formed an internal investigation team to investigate.

What are the allegations against Nikhil Gupta?

In the year 2023, the American had presented the intelligence document in the court. These documents are also in the public domain. According to the document, Nikhil Gupta, at the behest of an officer working for the Indian government, contacted a hitman (hired person) in America and gave him a contract to kill a Sikh separatist leader.

The US government has claimed that during a conversation with an Indian official, Nikhil Gupta had told that he was involved in international smuggling of narcotics and weapons and the 'coincidence' was such that the hitman with whom he was talking about the alleged murder of Pannu. He was an agent of the American Intelligence Department. According to the document, the hitman whom Nikhil Gupta contacted was an undercover agent of the US Intelligence Department. This agent monitored and recorded Nikhil Gupta's conversations and all his information and on this basis a case was registered.
